Kickstart
2005-08-31
Thanks to xquzme for tagging me…yes, as you predicted, normally this kind of thing would annoy me no end, but it’s nice to be noticed. I seem to have slipped back into my lurkerly ways, but I do have some excuses for not updating…not good ones, but excuses nonetheless. I guess I’ll stick the survey/viral/meme/taggy-type thing in here for those of you who just can’t get enough of my peculiarities while I try to recall some specifics of a very memory-impaired weekend. Consider me chastised…hopefully the momentum from this kick in the ass will sustain another entry. 10 years ago I was: 21. Beginning the fourth year of my first degree, very much still in love with my highschool sweetheart, smoking way too much pot, and beginning the cynicism of adulthood. I’d just moved back to my mother’s house after a summer of debauchery living in a small house with my two best friends near the beach, and was not happy about the prospect of having to mow the lawn again. 5 years ago I was: 26. I had just returned from a year living and working in Japan. I was in love with an American girl I’d met over there, and was missing her terribly because for financial reasons, we both had to move back to our respective hometowns and move back in with our mothers. I was working as a groundskeeper at a federally-owned observatory and getting paid nothing for it, but it didn’t matter because I got to be outside a lot and stoned all day. 1 year ago I was: 30. I was in my second month of a new job after six months of grinding unemployment, and becoming extremely good with Photoshop. Social life in Vancouver had finally grown roots and I was making some seriously cool friends. Money was finally starting to come in, and my debtload was inching toward the black. Yesterday I was: Helping my oldest friend pack up his home and family in preparation to move back to our hometown. For the first time, I realized that my hometown was no longer my hometown. When I got done helping him move, I went home. A friend from junior high school who lives in England now is staying with me for a few days, and had invited a university friend of his back for some beers. His friend is a Serious Crimes investigator for the RCMP, and was sitting right next to my bong and canister of weed. Good thing those things don’t comprise a Serious Crime in BC. I also decided to buy brewing equipment and start making beer again. 5 Snacks I enjoy: (1) almonds toasted in sesame oil and heavily salted (2) Stoned Wheat Thins and old cheddar (3) nectarines (4) mesclun greens with pumpkin seed oil and toasted pinenuts (5) Wunderbars 5 Songs I know all the words to: (1) every song by NoMeansNo (2) Hustle Rose by Metric (3) Plea from a Cat Named Virtue by The Weakerthans (4) Syracuse by Pinback (5) You Were Right by Built to Spill 5 Things I would do with $100 million: (1) Get myself out of debt (2) Get my friends out of debt and let them return to school if they want to (3) Buy the house I live in and the houses on either side of it, knock down the neighbour houses, fill mine with turrets, secret passages, a screening room, and a great big greenhouse, and landscape the neighbouring properties with native plants (4) Buy land on one of the Gulf Islands and build the kickassinest disc golf course ever (5) Invest the rest for any kids I might someday have 5 places I would run away to: (1) South Island, New Zealand (2) Galway, Ireland (3) Masset, Haida Gwaii (4) Madagascar (5) Iceland
5 things I would never wear: (1) bling (2) patent leather anything (3) tighty whities (4) cowboy anything (5) wifebeater 5 favourite TV shows: (I don’t have cable, but things I like on DVD…) (1) Invader Zim (2) Firefly (3) Farscape (4) Family Guy (5) CBC Newsworld (it sort of comes in on the rabbit ears) 5 biggest joys: (1) sitting on my porch (2) sleeping (3) smoking a joint then going to a movie (4) vegetable gardening (5) probably sex, but it’s getting hard to remember 5 favorite toys: (1) My bike (2) The thought of the new bike I want to buy (3) My barbeque and the wicked new silicon basting brush I got for it (4) My home theatre (5) My shovel/my Dremel tool (tie)
